Arrangement of Jugs

Arrangement of Jugs

This is Hodgkins only surviving print.

This is number 17 in the second series of Contemporary Lithographs which consists of 25 different lithographs by various artists.

Apart from a short period working as a textile designer for the Calico Printing Association in Manchester, Hodgkins earned her living as a painter. She developed from a minor provincial painter in New Zealand to a leading British one, continuously experimenting, not finding her personal style until her 60's. She described it as 'liberating still life from its domestic setting'. Griffits described Hodgkins Contemporary Lithograph as characterised by 'crisp floating shapes held in tension with patches and sweeps of clear colour: a brilliant cadmium yellow singing out next to a primary red contributes to a particularly light, buoyant image.' Piper, who was a good friend of Hodgkins, and helped her with this project, thought that her lithograph made the others look 'tame and school-girlish'. Published by Contemporary Lithographs Ltd, London.
