Berçeuse
Signed lithograph from an edition of 51.
Berçeuse of 1915 shows a mother gently sitting over a cradle, but the theme is dwarfed by the spacious room and the drawn curtains of a large window, again with the black night beyond. It's touching, but there is no Victorian sentimentality, the emphasis much more on the mother than the child. Gabain’s spacious but oppressive, even claustrophobic rooms and their
few props become characters in themselves, highlighting the emptiness and depletion.
