A dazzling white meringue, brittle and sweet, the pier has none of that delicate efficiency that the old chain pier possessed. The town was first in the English field with a pier, and its present ones are as florid and grand as any anywhere. They both look as if they are trying to project Brighton's swagger half across the Channel. Regency Square is laid out on the gentle slope immediately behind, and the busy part of Hove climbs the hill behind that.
