Madagascar Pochard
This little picture shines brightly for me because it celebrates the sort of work Louis does. The Madagascar Pochard was rediscovered in 2006 in a flock of 9 adults and 4 ducklings. Before that, the last individual was seen in 1991, after which it was presumed extinct. In 2009 a rescue package was established involving Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. A laboratory was set up by a lakeside and hatched ducklings taken to a holding facility. April 2012 saw 18 ducklings hatched in the captive breeding centre. Now, about 60 individuals live freely in Madagascar.
