The Hanging Gardens

The Hanging Gardens

Unsigned, third state published in 1929.

A woman in a garden is hanging laundry out to dry.

It is a view of the backs of houses and their gardens near Sickert's studio at Noel Street, Islington, seen from Regent's Canal. Sickert had taken a studio at 56 Noel Street in 1924.

The Hanging Gardens was advertised by Sickert in Fine Prints of the Year in 1926. It was again advertised as published by Ernest Brown & Phillips, the Leicester Galleries in Artwork Quarterly Catalogue of Prints, London, Autumn 1929 as well as in Fine Prints of the Year, London 1929. The etching is closely related to a painting (c.1924-6). Sickert executed several paintings of the back gardens of Noel Street.
