As she ran into the street she was grabbed by a sailor for an enthusiastic kiss, providing photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt with one of the most iconic pictures of the 20th Century.
Here, the 27-year-old nurse featured in the original photo has been replaced by the no less iconic image of Mrs Marge Simpson. Observing the clinch in the background is her husband Homer.
