The Adoration of the Shepherds: A night piece
Assumed date: 1652. The states: I: Background in front of Joseph's head is very lightly shaded by thin verticals. The pillow is nearly white. The sleeve touching Virgin's hand is unshaded. II: Background in front of Joseph's hand is somewhat darker. The pillow shaded by cross hatching. Virgin's sleeve delicately shaded. III: A narrow band appears across Virgin's forehead. IV: Joseph's hat changed into a fur cap with top pointed backwards and ear flaps (Boon). V: A second outline separates Virgin's sleeve from her hand. The brush of reeds behind her is worked over and now forms a rough bush surrounding Virgin and Child. VI: A plank partition is introduced into the background, running from lantern to the wall at right margin. Virgin's eyes are wide open. VII: About 7 curved lines on the cushion above child's head. VIII: The planks of the partition better defined and even the nail heads are visible. Shading in front of and above Joseph's head burnished out, also a piece of his cap. (Hind's supposed eighth state is based on a print in the BM retouched with ink). Modern: Basan (No further rework in the first edition of the Recueil, but heavily reworked and spoilt in later issues).
